Diploma of applied horticultural science

A diploma in applied horticultural science (DAPH) is awarded by a number of universities and colleges in the UK and Ireland. A DAPH is the first professional level qualification for the applied science of horticulture, such as viticulture or orchidology, or the associated skills of pest management or arboriculture. For those with the DAPH, many jobs in the horticultural sector are available, the majority of which offer an entry level starting salary of around £23,000 a year. There are a number of different ways in which a DAPH is obtained, including the International Diploma in Applied Horticultural Science, the International Diploma in Applied Horticultural Science with Wine making and the International Diploma in Applied Horticultural Science with Viticulture.

History

In the early 1990s, horticulture graduates could expect a graduate salary in the region of £18,000 a year. When the International Wine &, Spirit Education Trust (IWST) started training graduates in 1994, there was only one university offering such a course. In 1996, the IWST developed an interprofessional curriculum that had the potential to create a national network of professional horticulturalists. In 1997, the IWST and the Federation of Garden Societies of Great Britain and Ireland (FGS) came together to form a single umbrella organisation for horticulture professionals and in 1998 the FGS became the Chartered Society of Horticulture, a registered charity, with a Board of Directors representing the national horticulture sector.

The International Diploma in Applied Horticultural Science (IDAPH) was the result of a public consultation on a national qualifications framework for applied horticultural sciences. The framework was designed to provide the qualifications that horticulture graduates needed in order to work in the horticultural sector. In 2003, the first DAPH was awarded by the Institute of Landscape Design (ILD) on the basis of the framework. In 2003, as part of the IWST-led development of the ILD, the IDAPH gained recognition as an equivalent to the ILD Diploma in Horticulture.

The IWST-led development of the ILD was followed by the development of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture (CIH) as a member of the ILD in 2007. The CIH has subsequently won approval as an equal to the Diploma in Horticulture from the ILD.

In 2013 the Association for Horticultural Science (AHS) was awarded a Charter for horticulture in the UK and Ireland. The Association is an independent charity with the aim to 'promote, develop and advance the science and practice of horticulture'.

In November 2018 the Institute of Horticultural Science (IHS) was granted full University status by the University of Birmingham. IHS is part of the College of Science at the University of Birmingham.
