The coastal memoir: an investigation of landscape in the nonfiction of Robert Drewe and Tim Winton

From hulking boulders in the ochre-red heart of the country to coastal stromatolites dating back almost four billion years, the Australian continent is home to a jaw-dropping array of natural landscapes. Check out 11 of the most spectacularly scenic sites you can visit Down Under. But the collection of 36 enormous boulders known as Kata Tjuta is no less spectacular. Both these rock formations sprinkled across the ochre-red Central Australian landscape near Alice Springs are sacred to the local Indigenous population and inspire awe in visitors. A purpose-built jetty and boardwalk allows visitors to marvel at the stromatolites from above without damaging the landscape. These ancient desert sculptures are the sort of thing you can only find in the Australian desert, rising out of the bright yellow sand in the Nambung National Park north of Perth.

Students participating in the Natural Resources Northern and Yorke Young Environmental Leaders program recently took part in three coastal workshops focussing on beach nesting birds, including the Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers and the threatened Hooded Plover at Moonta, Stansbury and Coobowie. Natural Resources Northern and Yorke Community Ranger Fabienne Dee said that it was a great opportunity to introduce the students to the notion that the beach is not just for recreation, but that it is a habitat as well. The marine debris activity discussed the types of rubbish that have a negative impact on marine ecosystems including micro plastics, plastic bags and plastic fragments, and demonstrated how marine species can mistake these items for a food source such as fish eggs or squid. In particular, they were shocked at how long plastic and glass take to break down. Ms Dee said that students are encouraged to put their learning into action and share the information with their peers.
